Suggestions for ERW round+square/rectangular pipe mill

1 Summary

Some suggestions for choose pipe mill type are listed below for those producers who will produce both round and square/rectangular pipes.

2 Producing technique for producing round and square/rectangular pipes

2-1 Forming technique for round pipe:
Round pipes are mainly used for transporting pipe and structural pipe such as for automobile, ship, machinery, furniture and building. There are two kinds of forming technique for round pipe, which are “W” and “Cage” forming; one of them may be chosen for the pipe OD less than 16”. Cage forming is basically used for pipe OD bigger than 16”.

The above two techniques have their own features separately:

“W” forming has long techniques history with simple structure and low cost, but the disadvantages are that changeover time is long and workload is heavy. In order to overcome the disadvantages FD company has developed all kinds of quick change pipe mill, especially FD’s DNSA adjustment-free technology lets you omit trial running process by shortening the changeover time within 1~2 hours without waste, it is called W-DNSA pipe mill and not suitable for big size of pipe diameter mill because speed difference of the same roll is increased along with the size increase. 

“Cage” forming has lighter roll weight, shorter mill length with high automation level, changeover time and workload are lowered, but the disadvantage is that tooling in different section need to be changed. FD has developed a FD-Cage mill, no-tooling is changed for different size under automatic or electrical adjustment, which lowers the changeover time and workload, this kind of mill is called Cage-DNSA pipe mill. If used for small size pipe the two kinds of Cage forming mill are of high cost and not economical comparing with tooling saved.

2-2 Producing techniques for square/rectangular pipe:

Square/rectangular pipes are mainly used for automobile, ship, machinery, furniture and building such kind of structural pipes. There are also two kinds of forming techniques: one is round before square forming—that is round-to-square producing technique, the other is square before welding—that is directly square producing technique.

Round before square forming has advantages of simple structure of mill with low cost by using of round pipe mill, the disadvantages is big quantities of tooling with high power consumption and heavy weight of pipe.

By using directly squaring technique you can produce all size of products with one set of tooling under low power consumption, lighter pipe weight and better quality but you must have a new built pipe mill with higher cost and not easily producing round pipe.

The above two technique have the same disadvantage—heavy tooling change workload, longer changeover time, that is not good for producing square pipe. For this reason FD has developed CFS forming machine specialized in producing square/rectangular pipe, by one set of tooling and no-tooling change under electrically or automatically adjustment you may change size within 1 hour or even some minutes, we call it CFS-DNSA pipe mill.

Mixed technique for round and square/rectangular pipe prodcuing

In order to be convenient producing both round and square/rectangular pipe, FD has developed CFSR forming machine, when producing round pipe it is of all features of FD-Cage forming machine, when producing square/rectangular pipe is of all advantages of CFS forming machine, round before square/rectangular technique also may be used. Under electrically or automatically adjustment size to be changed during 1 hour or even some minutes this kind of mill is called CFSR-DNSA pipe mill.

Another option is that advanced tooling change technology is used for producing round pipe by modifying directly squaring pipe mill. The most advanced tooling change technology is FD-PPS automatic tooling change pipe mill(suitable for large size pipe mill) and FD-STC( stand-tooling-change) pipe mill (suitable for small size pipe mill), the two kinds of pipe mill equipped with function of automatic or electrical adjustment the size may be changed during 1~2 hours. The former is called PPS-DNSA pipe mill, the later is called xx-DNSA pipe mill.

Because the tooling are changeable freely for the above two kinds of pipe mill, the mill is more universal used to produce round, square/rectangular pipe and other products though some function are not as good as the other kinds of mill.
